Why timing matters more here than inland
The Sunshine Coast is not just hot. It is humid, salty near the coast, storm-prone in summer and full of mixed housing types. That affects air conditioning work in four ways. First, humid weather creates more drain and mould problems, so service calendars fill as soon as systems start running daily. Second, roof-space work for ducted systems becomes slow and unpleasant in midsummer. Third, storms can delay outdoor unit mounting and electrical work. Fourth, coastal condensers need maintenance before salt and summer load combine.
That is why shoulder season is so useful. In April and May, the worst summer urgency has passed, but the home is still warm enough to test cooling properly. In August and September, the weather is usually practical for servicing, roof inspections and planned installs before the first heatwave. If your system is still working but old, these are the months to get quotes rather than waiting for it to fail on a humid Sunday in January.
Prices do not usually halve in winter. The real saving is fewer urgent-call premiums, better access to preferred brands, more time to compare quotes and less chance that a small fault becomes ceiling damage or a compressor failure. Best timing by job type
Annual service: August to October is ideal. The filters, coils, drain and electrical checks are handled before the humid season. If you run aircon heavily or have a rental, a second light clean after summer can be sensible. A normal split service is often $180 to $280, and ducted service is often $280 to $480.
New split system: April, May, August and September are the cleanest windows. A standard back-to-back install can often be scheduled within 3 to 10 business days outside peak demand. In November and December, stock and installer availability become the limiter. If a bedroom unit is for a baby, shift worker or medical need, do not wait until the first heatwave.
Ducted air conditioning: plan earlier. Ducted needs a roof-space check, sizing, outlet layout, zoning plan, electrical assessment and sometimes body-corporate or landlord approval. May to September is the best stretch for ducted because roof spaces are safer and there is time to order the right gear. Repairs: the right time is when the symptom appears. Weak cooling, water leaks, burning smells and breaker trips rarely improve. A blocked drain can be $180 to $450 early and much more once plaster and electrical fittings get wet. The dripping water guide helps decide urgency.
When waiting is the cheaper option
If the system is safe, cooling adequately and only due for a cosmetic upgrade, waiting until April or August can be smarter than forcing a December install. You get more time to choose the right size, compare brands, check rebates and avoid hurried condenser placement. If you are selling in winter, a service and written report may be enough; a full replacement is not always needed.
If you are renting the property out, do not wait for a tenant complaint in January. Rental aircon faults become urgent quickly because access, owner approval and parts all have to line up. A planned service in September gives you a cleaner paper trail and fewer holiday-period surprises.
