Aircon rebate eligibility on the Sunshine Coast - what actually applies in 2026.

The honest position: Queensland does not have Victoria's VEU

First, a clarification because half the calls we get on this topic come from customers who have seen the Victorian VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrades) rebate posters and assume there is a direct equivalent up here. There is not. Queensland's energy efficiency incentives are smaller in scale, more conditional, and the funding rounds open and close - what was available in 2024 may not be in 2026, and what is open this quarter may be paused next quarter. That said, between three or four overlapping programs in 2026 there is real money on the table for the right job, and we will be straight with you about which apply.

Program 1 - Energex PeakSmart ($400, every install we can)

PeakSmart is a demand-response program run by Energex, the network operator for South East Queensland (including the entire Sunshine Coast). The deal is straightforward: you let Energex briefly reduce your air conditioner's power draw during peak grid events (think a 40-degree afternoon when the network is straining), and in return they pay you a one-off sign-on incentive - currently $400. The reduction is mild - your unit drops to about 50 percent compressor output for up to 20 minutes - so you might notice the room creep up a degree, a few times a summer. For $400 it is a no-brainer.

Eligibility is simple: the unit must be PeakSmart-certified. Most current top-of-range Daikin (Cora, US7, Alira X), Mitsubishi Electric (MSZ-AP, LN), Fujitsu Lifestyle, and Panasonic splits qualify. You also need to be an Energex network customer (which is everyone on the Sunshine Coast), and the install has to be done by an ARCtick-licensed installer who registers the unit at commissioning. We do this as standard on any qualifying install. Payment lands in 6 to 10 weeks direct to your nominated bank account from Energex.

Program 2 - Climate Smart Energy Savers (funding-dependent, up to ~$1000)

The QLD government runs Climate Smart Energy Savers, a rebate on energy-efficient appliances including reverse-cycle heat-pump air conditioners that meet a minimum efficiency rating (currently a 6.5-star cooling, 5-star heating zoned rating or better). The rebate is income-tested in part - concession-card holders get the higher amount, and the funding rounds open in tranches throughout the financial year. As of mid-2026 the current round is open with a cap of around $1000 per household, but this changes - we check the live state of the program at quote time and tell you exactly what is available that week.

We can claim Climate Smart rebate-net at install, meaning the rebate comes off your invoice up front and we submit the paperwork to the program administrator afterwards. That saves you 6 to 12 weeks of waiting for a payment.

What units qualify in 2026

Roughly speaking: any modern inverter-driven reverse-cycle split or ducted system from a tier-1 manufacturer in a mid-range or higher trim. Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-AP25/35/50/60, Daikin Cora and Alira X 2.5-8.0 kW, Fujitsu Lifestyle 2.5-7.1 kW, Panasonic Aero 2.5-7.1 kW - all of those hit the efficiency thresholds. The cheap end of the market (no-name brands at sub-$700 supply) generally does not. Worth knowing before you compare a "cheaper" no-rebate quote against a tier-1 rebate-net quote - once the rebate is netted the tier-1 install often comes out the same price or less.

Program 3 - Federal STCs on combined solar-plus-aircon

If you are putting solar on the roof at the same time as the new aircon, the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) generates Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) which we trade on your behalf. On a typical 6.6 kW solar plus new ducted aircon job that is generally worth $2500 to $3500 off the solar component of the invoice. The aircon itself is not directly STC-eligible, but the scheme effectively underwrites the solar that powers it, which is the real cost-of-running win. Combine STCs with PeakSmart and the discount on a top-of-range solar-plus-ducted-aircon install on the Sunshine Coast can be over $3000.

Rebate-net versus rebate-claimed-later - why it matters

Some installers quote a price, claim the rebate themselves on lodgement, and never pass it through. Some quote a price and tell you to claim it back yourself. Both are bad. The rebate-net quote we give you shows the gross price, the rebate amount, and the net you pay - same as a solar quote. The paperwork stays with us (we have done a few hundred of these and our rejection rate from the administrators is under 5 percent - wrong model numbers and missing serial photos are the usual reason a claim bounces and adds a month). You sign at install, the rebate is netted, you pay the difference, we lodge.

How to make sure your quote is rebate-net

Ask the question directly: "Is this rebate-net or do I claim later?" Any installer should give you a clear answer in writing on the quote. Look for three line items: gross install price, rebate amount, net payable. If the quote is a single number with rebates mentioned only verbally, push back. If you are a concession-card holder (Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, DVA Gold Card), say so up front - Climate Smart has a higher rebate tier for concession holders and we need to lodge under that pathway.

Same install non-coastal in Sippy Downs without the coastal-spec uplift: gross $2700, same rebates, net $1600. Larger 7.1 kW for a big open-plan living area at Buderim: gross $3850, net around $2750 after rebates.
