Ducted aircon repairs on the Sunshine Coast usually cost $220 to $1,450

A simple ducted aircon repair is often $220 to $650 after the call-out. Motor, PCB, duct and refrigerant faults are commonly $650 to $1,450, and compressor jobs can run $2,200 to $4,800. Use the estimator, then ask for a written diagnosis before approving parts.

Real 2026 ducted repair rates

Ducted systems hide most of the expensive work in the roof space: the fan coil, dampers, duct joins, sensors, wiring and drains. On coastal homes around Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Coolum, the outdoor unit also gets more salt exposure than inland systems around Nambour or Palmwoods. That does not mean every fault is expensive, but it does mean the diagnosis needs to separate a cheap control issue from a failing refrigeration circuit.

ItemTypical 2026 rateNotes for Sunshine Coast homes
Diagnostic call-out$140 - $240Includes testing electrical, refrigerant, controller and airflow basics.
Licensed refrigeration labour$120 - $170 per hourOften charged in half-hour or one-hour blocks after the call-out.
Drain clear or condensate pump$220 - $650Common in humid weather when algae blocks the drain line.
Capacitor, sensor or contactor$260 - $580Usually same-visit if the part is on the van.
Zone motor or controller$420 - $1,100Depends on whether the zone board and motor are brand-specific.
Indoor fan motor$750 - $1,650Roof-space access and brand lead time move the quote.
PCB or inverter board$850 - $1,900Worth comparing against age and replacement cost before approving.
Refrigerant leak test and minor repair$450 - $1,250Includes finding the leak before charging the system.
Compressor replacement$2,200 - $4,800Usually only sensible on younger premium ducted systems.

The 4 things that move a ducted repair quote

First, diagnosis time. A dead controller can look like a board fault, a blocked drain can look like an indoor coil fault, and poor cooling can be refrigerant, airflow or a failed zone damper. A careful tech spends time proving the fault instead of swapping parts until something works.

Second, access. A clean roof cavity in a single-storey Buderim brick home is faster than a low-pitch tiled roof with tight access and summer roof-space temperatures. If the indoor fan coil is hard to reach, labour can add $200 to $600 before parts are even considered.

Third, parts availability. Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu and Panasonic parts are usually available, but exact PCB and fan motor variants still matter. A return trip after parts arrive commonly adds $120 to $280 in labour unless it is bundled into the written repair price.

Fourth, system age. A 6 year old ducted system with one failed motor is a repair candidate. A 14 year old system with salt-corroded condenser coil, brittle duct and a failing board is a replacement conversation. For replacement options, read the ducted air conditioning service page.

Need the fault diagnosed properly?

Tell us the brand, age, suburb and symptom. We will price the diagnostic visit and explain likely repair paths before parts are ordered.

A worked example: ducted system leaking water in Maroochydore

A typical job in a low-set Maroochydore home: the ducted system runs for 20 minutes, then water appears around the hallway return-air grille. The call-out and diagnosis is $180. The tech finds a blocked drain, a dirty evaporator coil and a weak condensate pump. Drain clear and tray clean: $160. Replacement pump supplied and fitted: $290. Coil clean: $220. Total before GST treatment in the quote: $850. If the same job needed a second visit because the pump was not stocked, add around $140 to $220.

The cheaper option may be right if the fault is only a blocked drain and the system is otherwise cooling. In that case, paying for a new ducted system would be poor advice. But if the water leak is paired with ice on the indoor coil and low suction pressure, the quote needs leak detection, not just a drain clean. The repair path changes quickly.

When a homeowner does not need to pay us

There are a few safe checks you can do before booking. Clean the return-air filter, make sure all zones are open, check the controller batteries if it uses them, and confirm the outdoor unit is not buried in leaves or palm fronds. If the breaker has tripped once after a storm, reset it once only. If it trips again, stop. Repeated breaker trips, burnt smells and water inside the ceiling are not homeowner jobs.

If the system is cooling normally and the only issue is stale air, book an annual aircon service rather than a repair call. If one room is poor because it faces west and has large glass, a service may not fix it. That is a sizing and zoning issue, and sometimes a small split system installation for that room is cheaper than reworking the whole ducted system.

Ducted repair cost questions

What does a ducted aircon repair usually cost on the Sunshine Coast?
Most ducted aircon repairs on the Sunshine Coast land between $220 and $1,450 in 2026 after diagnosis. Simple electrical parts are often under $650, while board, motor and refrigerant faults usually sit higher because parts and leak testing add time.
Is it worth repairing a ducted system over 10 years old?
A repair under $700 is usually worth considering if the system cools well, the ductwork is sound and the fault is isolated. Once a 10 to 15 year old ducted system needs a compressor, indoor coil or major PCB over $1,800, replacement pricing should be put beside the repair before you approve it.
How much is a diagnostic call-out?
A standard Sunshine Coast diagnostic call-out is usually $140 to $240 in business hours. That should include fault testing, not just a quick look, and the repair should be quoted before parts are fitted.
Can refrigerant just be topped up?
No, not as a proper repair. A refrigerant top-up without leak detection often costs $280 to $650 and may cool for a short time, but if the system is leaking the same fault returns and the compressor can be damaged.
What repair can wait a season?
A noisy zone motor, damaged outlet grille or tired controller can often wait 1 to 3 months if the system still cools and drains correctly. Water leaks, burning smells, breaker trips and weak cooling in summer should be treated as same-week jobs.
When should I replace instead of repair?
Replacement starts to make sense when the quoted repair is more than 30% to 40% of a new ducted system and the unit is already past 12 years old. A new ducted install is commonly $11,000 to $22,000, so a $500 repair is different from a $3,000 compressor decision.
